|Wilma - The Band|
Wilma Groenen wraps her powerhouse vocals and passionate delivery around everything from grinding blues and swinging two-steps to weeping ballads. Aside from being an amazing blues and R&B singer, Wilma's accomplished songwriting and social commentary has made her a much admired and beloved performer across Saskatchewan.
Wilma's extraordinary band is made up of seven wonderful musicians. Doug Scarrow has been playing guitar in the blues and rock scene in Saskatoon for many years, and can be seen playing at Bud's On Broadway with Winnipeg's Big Dave McLean. Doug provided the musical inspiration for many of Wilma's lyrics on her CD Eat the Sky. Ernie Kurz is a great blues harmonica, guitar and dobro player, and his harp licks complement Wilma's voice and energy. Glenn Ens brings over 35 years of drumming experience to the band, and together with Gary Smith, who has been Wilma's bass player for twenty-six years, holds the rhythm together like a rock, coaxing the crowd onto the dance floor. Roy Sydiaha contributes precise percussion and vocals. Rod Salloum is not only an excellent keyboard player, but also a dynamic singer. Finally, the newest member of the band, Anna Bekolay, provides a hint of gypsy flavour with her violin and soaring soprano.
Wilma has been performing a mixed bag of covers, ranging from the highly recognizable Fleetwood Mac to the obscure Texas blues queen Marcia Ball for some twenty-six years. In 2001 she compiled a CD of her original material. Her shows incorporate all of these elements: it's like comfort food with just that little twist to keep it fun and surprising. And the band ALWAYS gets the joint jumping.
